April 2012 Card of The Month

Another month has come and gone here at TCZ, and we have yet another first time winner in our Card of The Month contest. This month we only got 3 submissions, but they were all pretty dandy cards, as far as I'm concerned. It was a pretty tough decision all around this time. So, let's get to it.

First, let's take a look at this month's winner. Numbered /75 is pretty high, but with the looks of this card along with the quality of player this one was a pretty decisive winner in this month's voting. Congratulations to franklinguy52 on his first CoTM win, with his Mike Stanton gu/auto from Topps Tribute.

Robert Griffin III agrees to card deal with Panini America

Panini America, one of the top manufacturers of trading cards, announced today that it has landed a deal with Washington Redskin's quarterback, Robert Griffin III. Robert Griffin III, also widely known as RGIII, was the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner, becoming the only Heisman Trophy winner from Baylor University.

RGIII's first licensed trading cards will be featured in 2012 Panini Prestige Football, a product that RGIII will also be featured on the packaging for.

At the time of this signing Panini America has inked a total of 24 out of 32 total first round draft picks, and expects to land deals with the remaining 8 soon.

Trading Cards with Funny Faces

Every week, starting last week, we post up a category for our members to post cards into in a little thing we call TCZ Showdown. We post the category, take nominations, have 5 days of voting, and crown a winner.

Our first week's category was funny faces. Members are to share a card where the features player, or person, on the card is making the funniest face.

You wouldn't think there would be very many good entries for something like this simply because someone has to actually pick the photos that go on trading cards. It appears, though, that person might have had 1 too many sips of something when they approved these cards photos.

February 2012 Card of The Month

February yielded 6 entries for card of the month including 2 that were pulled from the first ever group break hosted here on TCZ. Let's have a look at some of the entries from February, shall we.

First up, from patchguy2011 we had 2 very nice patches, both from Panini Gridiron Gear. The first one nominated was a nice 3-color dual patch of DeAngelo Williams.

The next one was a jumbo 4-color patch of Daniel Thomas. This one actually ended up tied for 2nd place in the voting.

January 2012 Card of The Month

Starting in January 2012 we decided to start holding a contest of the best cards pulled by our members. Those cards are nominated and voted on by other members of TCZ and a winner is selected. These winners will go on to compete in our Card of The Year poll which will be voted on with the end of year awards.

Let's take a look at the nominations from our first month.

The first 2 cards nominated were nominated by their owner, pwolantern. He pulled both of these cards in a single box of 2011 Topps Rising Rookies football. I mean, I would have been happy with either of these hits, but to pull them both from the same box must have felt amazing.
